Our Journey Toward Sustainability
This Ramadan, we’re excited to share one of the steps we’re taking to become more eco-friendly: transitioning from plastic poly mailers to FSC-certified paper bands for our clothing packaging. It’s a small change, but it’s part of our ongoing effort to protect the environment and uphold the Islamic principle of being stewards of the earth.
Why Eco-Friendliness Is Important in Islam
Caring for the environment isn’t just a nice idea—it’s a deeply rooted part of our faith. As Muslims, we believe that the Earth is an amanah (a trust) given to us by Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Earth is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you His stewards over it.” (Sahih Muslim). And the Quran reminds us, “And do not waste, for indeed, Allah does not like the wasteful” (Quran 6:141). By making eco-friendly choices, we take small but meaningful steps in fulfilling these responsibilities.
These teachings inspire us to keep improving our sustainability efforts, even when it’s not always easy. Research and best practices are constantly evolving, but we’re committed to doing our best and learning as we go.
Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
Beyond changing our packaging, we’re encouraging our community to take simple steps towards a greener Ramadan and lifestyle in general. Here are some easy ways you can make a difference:
1. Say No to Disposable Plates and Utensils
Hosting an iftar? Try using reusable plates, cups, and utensils instead of disposables. It’s not just better for the planet—it’ll make your meal feel more special as well.
2. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
Whether you’re heading to taraweeh prayers or breaking your fast, keep a reusable water bottle with you. It’s an easy way to cut down on plastic waste from single-use bottles.
3. Plan Your Meals Thoughtfully
Avoid food waste by planning your meals carefully. Cook just enough for your family or guests, and if there’s extra, share it with neighbors or someone in need.
4. Compost Your Food Scraps
Instead of tossing food scraps in the trash, consider composting them. It’s a simple way to reduce landfill waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden or flower beds.
5. Choose Meaningful, Sustainable Gifts
When picking out Eid gifts, think about sustainable options like items made from sustainable materials, handmade items, or experiences instead of mass-produced items.
6. Support Ethical Brands
Seek out businesses that prioritize ethical and sustainable practices for their products.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Jemaly, we know that becoming truly sustainable is a journey, not a quick fix. From switching to eco-friendly packaging to encouraging our community to adopt greener habits, we’re working toward a healthier planet one step at a time.
This Ramadan, let’s remember that taking care of the earth is part of our worship. Together, we can celebrate the blessings of this holy month while protecting our environment for future generations.
